India Ratifies Paris Agreement, Commits to Reducing Emissions

India has officially ratified the Paris Agreement, joining the global movement to tackle climate change. At a ceremony held at the United Nations headquarters in New York on October 2, 2016, Indian Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar handed over the Instrument of Ratification to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, is a landmark global agreement to combat climate change. It aims to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C. The agreement also calls for countries to enhance their efforts to adapt to the impacts of climate change and to strengthen their ability to deal with the impacts of climate change.

India’s ratification of the Paris Agreement comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in early September that India would do so on October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Speaking at the UN Summit on Climate Change in New York last year, Modi had said that India would ratify the Paris Agreement on Gandhi Jayanti “as a tribute to the Mahatma’s ideals and vision.”

As the world’s third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases after China and the United States, India’s commitment to the Paris Agreement is crucial in the global effort to reduce emissions. India has pledged to reduce its emissions intensity (emissions per unit of GDP) by 33-35% below 2005 levels by 2030, and to achieve 40% of its cumulative electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030.

India’s ratification of the Paris Agreement is a significant step in the global effort to combat climate change. With the world facing the urgent challenge of rising temperatures, it is important for countries to come together and take action to mitigate the impacts of climate change. By ratifying the Paris Agreement, India has demonstrated its commitment to reducing emissions and contributing to a sustainable future for all.
